Data Warehouse vs Data Mart

In this article today, we will be comparing two specific database management system tools that will impact your business. It can be pretty tricky to choose between the two because both are pretty similar. Both provide helpful information to make decisions that will benefit the organization. Therefore, we will dissect the two systems to find out which one is better for your organization.

Data Warehouse

A data warehouse is specifically responsible for gathering and organizing basic information from several different locations to provide the managers and owners of businesses with useful analytic information. These analytics will go quite far in assisting with decision-making, overly improving the efficiency of the company.

Its design forms a grouping of row information that operates individually from the core operational systems that the business has running for it. Therefore, all the data is stored in this specific schema or valuable structure for historical purposes. These historical purposes will mainly be to make future decisions for the business.

Multiple functional units are a term used to describe how this row information is gathered from the warehouse. You cannot enter basic details directly into a data warehouse because it allows for a specific integration. An example of this would be a data warehouse that is responsible for storing names. If you try to enter a number into the system, then it will not accept this. This means that the data must be checked and cleaned to fit into the system.

An example of this would be collecting birthdays and providing their birthday to you in raw form as a sentence. You would then have to check this sentence and gather the information yourself. Once you have assembled it, you may then input it in the birthday format that is accepted.

The standard structure of the data you will input into the system will allow for very complex queries revolving around this raw information. The main benefit of this is that you will have increased storage capacity because the information you have is specific and practical. You will therefore be able to perform more complex analytics and queries when you wish to gather information. For example, if you want to know how many people on the database were born in a specific year, you can get this data quickly.

Data Mart

This system is one of the more straightforward options you can gather to manage raw information. It is much simpler since it has mainly been designed to cater to one single format or subject. In this way, you will understand that it can only accept information from specific locations and sources.

These will have been predetermined by the technicians that are running this software in your organization. It has been designed as an index system and therefore operates as a speedy way of extracting information when you need it.

Consequently, you will find that this is one of its more significant advantages because it is faster than many of its competitors. It is beneficial in an educational setting for universities because it is subject orientated. Therefore, you will only be able to add data that is within specific parameters.

It is, therefore, slightly an alternative version of a data warehouse that specifically manages one subset of data. Not many users across the organization will have access to this information, nor will they often need it. Since it is peculiar, it does not offer the users much storage capabilities. Although it does present itself positively in terms of the speed of access analytics you can receive from the database, this might be a negative aspect. The information is not raw, but rather, it is explicitly being put into the system as an index, allowing the manager more excellent analytics to make decisions.

Main Comparisons

  1. Storage

In terms of storage, you will find that the data warehouse can provide a larger capacity for raw data. This is since it has a broader scope of information that it can accept, whereas the information is specific to one subject when looking at Data Mart. This is also true because data warehouses can get information from many sources; however, Data Mart works from a single start.

  1. Departmental Use

If you are looking to use this software across your organization’s board, you should use a Data Warehouse. For only one Department that requires specific information, your best option would be to choose Data Mart.

  1. Ease of Use

The easier option for your technicians to use is the Data Mart system because it only accepts one type of data. Therefore, it is straightforward for you to design. Data Warehouse Requires more specific programming because it can get data from a vast number of information sources.

  1. Speed

Data Warehouse is much slower in terms of speed because of the types of data it has. The data is less specific and less indexed; therefore, it becomes more difficult for you to get the exact information you are looking for. Data Mart Is an extractive option that has been designed for quick and straightforward retrieving of data.

  1. Implementation

If time is not on your side, you might be looking to implement something much faster, and DataMart will only take you about a month on average to get it up and run. Data Warehouse will likely take almost a year to set up.

In conclusion, it depends on what your organization is requiring. If you only need one specific topic of information to be stored to be quickly extracted, then you should go with Data Mart. It is the fastest and most straightforward option to implement and provides the best analytics for the chosen subject topic.

Data Warehouse Is a broader and more complex system that can accept information from a wide range of sources. It is also not as fast in terms of retrieving the information and providing you with analytics. It does, however, present you with a greater storage capacity for raw data.
