At Mobilise we believe in using technology for social good. That’s why we are proud to have recently contributed to the fundraising efforts of TN Stars FC, a football academy for youth in the central Malawi town of Kasungu. Malawi is a developing country in Africa, with a GDP per capita of around $500, but it has the fastest-growing population of youth. Football has the power to inspire, unite, and create opportunities for young people in Malawi, and TN Stars FC is a shining example of that.
TN Stars FC was founded in 2009 by Dr. Thomas Nyirenda, a Malawian medical doctor who trained in the UK between 1987 and 1999. Dr. Nyirenda founded the club as part of his contribution to alleviating poverty through sport for development. Despite struggles through lack of sponsorship, TN Stars FC qualified for the Premier League called Super League of Malawi in 2018.
The club’s main achievements have been creating a source of employment for in-school and out-of-school Malawian boys between the ages of 18 and 30, exposing the talent of a coach who got picked to take up national team coach responsibilities for Malawi, playing in Airtel Top 8 Cup in Malawi for three consecutive seasons despite being rookies, contributing to the growth of various businesses in the Kasungu town while catering for football fans from surrounding areas of Kasungu during league seasons, and developing up to three Malawian youth in football – all of whom have represented the country as members of Malawian national sides.
In 2023, TN Stars FC suffered relegation into a lower league of Malawi. However, everyone at the club is determined to get the team back in Super League by the end of this year. From March 2023, the club will add a female squad under its sponsorship to benefit girls and women in line with FIFA requirements.
